{"id":46843,"date":"2021-02-25T19:43:22","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T11:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chinamediaproject.org\/?p=46843"},"modified":"2021-05-07T23:15:55","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T21:15:55","slug":"hiring-globally-for-chinas-voice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinamediaproject.org\/2021\/02\/25\/hiring-globally-for-chinas-voice\/","title":{"rendered":"Chongqing Hires Globally for China&#8217;s Voice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>China\u2019s\npublic diplomacy today centers on a phrase introduced by Xi Jinping at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccdi.gov.cn\/toutiao\/201711\/t20171113_126275.html\">National\nPropaganda and Ideology Work Conference<\/a> back on August 19, 2013. That phrase, \u201ctelling China\u2019s story well\u201d (\u8bb2\u597d\u4e2d\u56fd\u6545\u4e8b), expresses the ruling Party\u2019s hope that it can\nbetter influence global public opinion on China, countering critical views and\npolicies and bolstering its \u201ccomprehensive national power.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though superficially softer in tone, and perhaps more subtle in approach, than the old notion the \u201cexternal propaganda\u201d (\u5916\u5ba3), \u201ctelling China\u2019s story well\u201d is part of the same general playbook updated for the 21st centuy. As Xi said in his 2013 speech: \u201c[We] must meticulously and <strong>properly conduct external propaganda<\/strong>, innovating external propaganda methods, working hard to create new concepts, new categories and new expressions that integrate the Chinese and the foreign, <strong>telling China\u2019s story well<\/strong>, communicating China\u2019s voice well.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, you too can be part of this story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week, on February 22, \u201cChongqing Releases\u201d\n(\u91cd\u5e86\u53d1\u5e03), an official\nchannel operated across a number of platforms by the Information Office of the municipal\ngovernment in Chongqing, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sina.com.cn\/c\/2021-02-22\/doc-ikftssap8131336.shtml\">put out\na call<\/a> for conscientious English-proficient candidates to help operate its \u201ciChongqing\u201d\noverseas communication platform, including management of related accounts on\nFacebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><div class=\"container-image-overlay\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/chinamediaproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Chongqing-Fabu-452x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46844\"\/><\/div><figcaption>Top portion of an advertisement shared on online social media channels for \u201ciChongqing\u201d on February 22, 2021. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The ad itself provides a fascinating inside look at\nhow regional and local governments across China are also rising to the\nchallenge of \u201ctelling China\u2019s story well,\u201d scrambling to establish their own\nchannels of external communication and parroting the external propaganda\nlanguage of the leadership. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201ciChongqing\u201d platform looking to expand its overseas staff is operated by the <em>Chongqing Daily<\/em> (\u91cd\u5e86\u65e5\u62a5), the official CCP mouthpiece for the Chongqing municipality. The platform\u2019s website is mostly dedicated to highlighting the cultural richness of Chongqing and its merits as a business destination. But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ichongqing.info\/category\/news\/news-policies-and-regulations\/\">&#8220;news&#8221; section of the site<\/a> also demonstrates how official positions and themes from Chinese-language propaganda &#8212; such as China&#8217;s claimed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ichongqing.info\/2021\/02\/24\/chongqing-alleviates-poverty-through-industrial-development-chongqing-opportunity\/\">victories in fighting poverty<\/a>, and self-praise about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ichongqing.info\/2021\/01\/24\/birth-of-the-14th-five-year-plan-in-chongqing\/\">the 14th Five-Year Plan<\/a> &#8212; translate awkwardly into English-language news stories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Positions being hired for by &#8220;iChongqing&#8221; include two deputy editors, two foreign reporters, and a foreign social media manager. Looking for a You Who Can Use English to Tell China\u2019s Story Well<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A High Starting Position \/ Great Benefits \/ Good Room for Advancement<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Pioneering, communicative and creative \u2013 If you want to tell the story of Chongqing, don\u2019t miss [this opportunity]. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2193\u2193\u2193<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Chongqing International Communication Center\uff08Chongqing City International Cultural Exchange Center\uff09 is a professional overseas media organization operated by the Chongqing Daily Newspaper Group, responsible for building and operating the \u201ciChongqing\u201d overseas communication platform matrix to tell Chongqing\u2019s story well to overseas users, and to communicate China\u2019s voice, expanding the influence of Chongqing overseas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Since the official website of \u201ciChongqing\u201d was launched in August 2018, we have operated official \u201ciChongqing\u201d accounts on overseas mainstream social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Linkedin, developing a \u201c1+N\u201d overseas media matrix of online communication, creating the \u201cEight Directions SmartHub\u201d (\u667a\u6c47\u516b\u65b9) online news service platform.
